Nominated by Otilia Sorto
Silvia Martinez Garcia has been a resident of Oklahoma since 2001. She has been active and supportive of community civil and human rights groups since then. She has reached out to Latin American, in particular, who suffer most for lack of health and education services.
She has helped her community to access social services and has been very innovative and creative through the use of social media and through grassroots communication. She has reached out to the Hispanic business community seeking employment opportunities for Latino men and women and has been very effective in building and developing an economic development network that continues to grow daily.
Silvia believes that the seeds she sows on a daily basis will bear fruit for her community, and that keeps her motivated.
On December 10th, the Oklahoma Universal Human Rights Alliance will honor human rights heroes from around our great state. A recognition program will take place at the State Capitol. Silvia Martinez Garcia will be among those to be recognized. More information about the program can be found here: "Celebrate Human Rights."
